How do I work backwards from a mutual fund target amount?
People type a SIP first and hope the future is kind. Cuttack engineers work backwards from a load. Your folio can too.
Skip to the calculator below this article
Start from the rupee you will actually need
Cuttack cousin said “just SIP ₹5,000, targets will come.” Targets do not come. They are invited with a date.
Need ₹42 lakh in 9 years (maybe a shop deposit plus interiors). At 12% that is about ₹24,000 SIP. At 10%, ~₹26,500.
That is the actual question. Not the slogan on the brochure.
In Cuttack this debate still shows up at dinners as if character, not cash flow, is the variable.
The spreadsheet is the easy half. The debit surviving April is the rest.
If today’s brochure is ₹30 lakh and your world inflates 8%, nine years later is ~₹60 lakh. Recalculate. The cute ₹16,000 SIP was lying.
When the gap looks ugly, the gap is doing its job.
Nobody hands out a medal for pretending your Excel is braver than your salary.
Inflate the goal, then divide into months
Write today’s cost. Multiply by (1+inflation)^years. That is the calculator target, not the 2026 PDF.
Plug the inflated number, 10% and 12%, into the SIP calculator on this page. Keep the higher debit if you can; keep the later date if you cannot.
Open a calculator and type the ugly version first—₹30 lakh target typed without inflation on a 9-year shop plan is how people “missed by ₹18 lakh” and blamed markets..
Pretty assumptions belong in investor-day decks, not in your rent money.
Re-run when the quote from the contractor changes. Goal-based investing is maintenance, not a tattoo.
Reverse SIP does not care that ₹24,000 is awkward. Awkward is information.
If you cannot explain the result to a slightly impatient parent, you do not understand it yet.
Targets copied from cousins
Using 15% so the SIP fits the leftover after Swiggy. Leftover is not a financial plan.
A target with no year. That is a mood board.
Three targets (house, education, bike) in one SIP. You will spend the wrong one.
The internet will sell you a one-line rule. One-line rules do not pay EMIs.
Your cousin’s 2017 small-cap luck is not a policy.
When the salary or the date moves, reopen the calculator. Do not recycle last year’s PDF.
In Cuttack the skipped review later becomes a complaint about luck. It was maintenance.
Two boxes: date and amount
One goal, one folio or one clear label, reverse SIP twice a year.
If reverse SIP > 25% of take-home: smaller target, later year, or a step-up—not a fictional rate.
Near the date (2–3 years): start lowering equity share of this specific pile.
If a card is revolving, this page is homework, not a green flag to invest more.
Investing while revolving a 36% card is theatre.
A thinner SIP or a slower prepay still exists. A six-month disappear does not.
A smaller SIP or a shorter loan goal beats a heroic screenshot you cancel in six weeks.
₹42 lakh in 9 years
₹42 lakh / 9y / 12% ≈ ₹24,000 SIP.
₹60 lakh inflated / 9y / 12% ≈ ₹34,000. Inflation was the missing line in the cousin’s advice.
₹24,000 not possible: 12 years at 12% needs ~₹15,000. You bought time.
Those are planning numbers, not a promise from a mutual fund or a bank RM.
If the plan only works at 18% returns or a 6% home loan forever, it is not a plan.
The bear version is the one you should be able to explain at dinner.
Keep a 10% haircut for tax, fees, or the extra month the builder delays.
If the reverse SIP scares you, the goal was a wish
Work backwards. Pride works forwards and lies.
A target amount without a SIP that fits is a Pinterest board.
Quiet deposits look dull until they are the only thing that showed up.
Calendar reminder beats a quote about discipline.
If a friend in Cuttack asks the same thing next month, send them the calculator link, not a lecture.
And please date your spreadsheet. Future you will not remember which fantasy version this was.
Use this to think. Use a human with a licence before you transfer.
Quick answers
How do I calculate SIP from a target amount?
Inflate the goal to the future rupee, pick 10–12% and the years left, then solve for monthly SIP. The widget on this page does that loop when you edit sliders.
Why did my target jump after inflation?
Because the shop or college in 9 years is not priced in 2026 stickers. Ignoring that is the most common miss.
Can one SIP fund three goals?
You can, and then you will redeem the wrong goal first. Label piles or use separate folios.
Change the numbers in the calculator above and see the result on this page.
